AVID
Sequoia Middle School has been re-designated as an AVID National Demonstration School, reaffirming its commitment to fostering college and career readiness through rigorous instruction, student support, and a school-wide college-going culture. First earning this prestigious status in 2019, Sequoia underwent a rigorous revalidation process to demonstrate its high-quality implementation of AVID strategies, which include note-taking techniques, reading comprehension, and writing practices that equip students with essential academic skills. As a revalidated AVID site, Sequoia will continue to serve as a model for schools across Southern California, hosting educators who seek to learn best practices for narrowing achievement gaps and increasing college access. Additionally, AVID coordinators collaborate with feeder schools and other programs within Fontana Unified and beyond to share successful strategies and ensure students at all levels receive the support needed to succeed.
Beyond its AVID recognition, Sequoia Middle School was first designated as a California School to Watch in 2018, then re-designated in 2021 and again most recently in 2024. This honor highlights Sequoia’s dedication to academic excellence, social-emotional growth, and equitable access to high-quality education. These multiple distinctions solidify Sequoia’s place as a leader in student achievement and a model of innovation for middle schools nationwide.

Our AVID program is open to all students on campus. This program helps students understand the importance of college and helps them prepare for their future. College trips are taken through the school year to encourage students to always reach to the highest level.
