Dual Language Immersion Program at Sequoia Middle School
Sequoia Middle School is proud to continue Fontana Unified School District’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program at the secondary level, providing students with the opportunity to further develop their bilingualism, biliteracy, and cultural proficiency. Expanding Bilingualism and Biliteracy
At Sequoia Middle School, students enrolled in the DLI program receive content instruction in both languages, allowing them to strengthen their linguistic abilities while mastering grade-level subjects such as language arts, social studies, and science. The program follows a carefully structured approach that balances instruction in English and Spanish, ensuring students develop high levels of academic achievement in both languages.
By middle school, DLI students refine their ability to read, write, speak, and think critically in both languages. They engage in complex discussions, analyze literature, and complete projects that require deep linguistic and academic skills. This continued exposure to bilingual education prepares them for advanced coursework in high school and ultimately for the State and District Seals of Biliteracy.
Academic Excellence and Global Readiness
Participation in Sequoia Middle School’s DLI program not only strengthens students' language proficiency but also enhances their overall academic performance. Research has shown that students in dual language programs often outperform their peers in monolingual settings, as bilingualism contributes to greater cognitive flexibility, problem-solving skills, and academic success.
By continuing their dual language education at Sequoia, students:
- Develop academic literacy in both English and Spanish.
- Strengthen cognitive skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving.
- Gain access to advanced academic programs and enrichment opportunities.
- Prepare for future career and college opportunities that value bilingual proficiency.
Our program also fosters essential 21st-century skills, such as collaboration, adaptability, and technological proficiency, ensuring that students are well-prepared for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
Cultural Awareness and Sociocultural Competency
A key goal of Sequoia’s DLI program is to nurture students’ appreciation and understanding of diverse cultures. By learning in two languages, students gain a deeper awareness of global perspectives, helping them develop respect for different traditions and communities. They engage in activities, discussions, and projects that promote cross-cultural understanding, preparing them to be responsible, culturally competent citizens.
Through this program, students build meaningful connections with their peers and communities, embracing diversity as a strength and using their bilingual skills to positively impact their surroundings.
Preparing for Future Success
Sequoia Middle School’s DLI program is designed to support students on their path to fluency, academic excellence, and future opportunities. Students who successfully complete the program will be well-equipped for high school dual language courses, leading them toward earning the State and District Seals of Biliteracy, a prestigious recognition of bilingual proficiency that enhances college and career prospects.
Whether pursuing higher education, joining the workforce, or engaging in global initiatives, Sequoia’s DLI students graduate from the program with the linguistic and cultural skills necessary to thrive in today’s competitive, multilingual world.
We invite students and families to be a part of this enriching and transformative educational experience at Sequoia Middle School, where bilingualism opens doors to endless opportunities!
